DI-1100 remote data storage

The help file seems to indicate that I can use the remote control record input to record data to disk only when there is a closed switch between the + and - terminals. I have not been able to trigger recording to a file with this input. I have set the remote storage in windaq to both "1" and "0" and it seems to have no effect. Am I misunderstanding the manual?
